Kerala - The Spice Trade

For thousands of years the abundance of spices have lured travellers to this part of India. The port of Cochin itself was founded & has flourished trading in the precious cargos of the ancient Spice Route. We loved wandering through the spice warehouses with their evocative aromas & colourful sacks of exotic fare.
Frankincense, turmeric, nutmeg, ginger ..... just a few of the spices we touched, saw & smelt & have included in the photos above! We'd never seen Frankincense before. The buidings are 16thC Portuguese, unchanged but crumbling, sadly.
